I am having irritated taste buds/pimples in the the tongue (near the tip) for more than three months now. I have been to every doctor and they don't find the reason. I have taken the following test so far:
I am currently taking ciprofloxacin because certain bacteries were found in my tongue. I was diagnosed with candida 3 months ago but to my surprise the test came back negative recently. I said to my surprise because my tongue is white. But now I think it's white because of my excessive white fomy saliva.
Besides the irritated taste buds/pimples I have also the following symptoms:
- White tongue
- Teeth marks in the tongue's borders
- Hyper salivation
I saw two dentists and they didn't find any "pathologyc" signs in my tongue.
Please take a look to the pictures to see my case. Has anyone had something similar? What does this looks to you?
Tongue left side: notice the pimple/irritated taste buds?
Tongue front: notice the irritated taste buds
Thanks in advance for your advice.
To me, "teeth marks in the tongue's border" indicate a clenching activity with the tongue thrust against the teeth. It is possible that the anterior tip of tongue is getting irritated by the pressure place against the front teeth.
In the resting mouth, the the teeth are apart with the tongue resting behind the lower anterior teeth , touching nothing. This is the position the jaw takes after swallowing of saliva. If you are keeping your teeth together, try keeping them apart as described above. It might improve matters.
Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your answer, Doctor, and sorry for replying so late.
I am suffering of this for the last 5 months. The pimples/swollen taste buds in the tip on
tongue appeared about 4 months after a sexual incident (girl performing fellatio on me). I am not sure if there's a connection between these tongue issues and that incident, but I am pretty stressed about that.
I have been tested 4 times for HIV since that incident (last test being about 7 months post probable exposure), all negative. I tested positive for candida albicans about 4 months post incident, but tested negative 3 months later. However, I tested positive for 3 different bacteries in my tongue about a month ago. I have been given ciprofloxacin for that, not major changes.
According your experience and my symptoms what do you suggest me to do?
I will go back to the dermatologist next week to see if the bacteries dissapeared, but I am running out of options here. The pimples/swollen taste buds in the tip of my tongue are sometimes painful, specially when I speak a lot (because those touch my front teeth).
I was a healthy guy all my life until now. I have never been to a hospital and never I had so many tests done as in the last months.
Does this sounds like a virus (HPV? HIV?) ? geographic tongue? cancer?
I don't know if you ever found an answer to your problem I seem to be suffering from a similar aliment.
Beginning of Sept '12 I had sexual contact with a girl and gave oral sex to her. Over the next several weeks I became sick, with cold/flu like symptoms. Then the burning sensation began a week later and I noticed enlarged "tastebuds" on the tip of my tongue. Have taken several photos over the past few weeks they dont seem to change just stay there. I went to ER to have them check it out(around end of Oct) they just proscribed some antibiotics and sent me on my way. Didnt really improve the look at all but about week after antibiotics my tongue burns a lot less. Dont know if it has anything to do with them but just glad it doesnt burn as much. When to my primary doctor today and she wasnt really sure. Running blood tests to see if anything is out of wack. Thinks burning sensation is coming from vitamin B deficiency. But wasnt sure about the enlarged "tastebuds"
From End of Oct when really bad burning sensation.
From 11/11 most of burning sensation gone still have spots but not as red.
You are the first other case that I have seen that has pretty similar symptoms. I am almost positive that it came from giving oral sex to the girl I was seeing. Timing just seems to much of a coincidence. I feel like it is some virus possibly HPV strain or something. I have been checked for HIV and came back negative.
Any new news on what you have?
Unfortunately, my problems still persist. My dermatologist has suggested me to go with an inmunologist, and eventually an oral surgeon for a biopsy of the irritated taste buds.
Some other pictures of my tongue:
I am waiting for the results of an HPV I took. They did a tongue scrapping and sent it to the lab. The HPV test was to my suggestion after I found this article:
My tastebuds are not so raised as those, but still.
All the best.
Hey did you ever get your results back from the hpv test?
Yes, the test was positive for HPV-16, took a treatment but nothing changed: the taste buds in the front border of my tongue are still irritated, for 7 months now
the tastebuds are sometimes painful, sometimes not. right now for example, they're painful. i think this is because i was talking too much today and the friction with the teeth doesn't help. i don't know what to do.
did you solve your tongue problems? is your tongue still white?
