Long haul travel

Need advice. How many of you folk have embarked on a long haul flight following your treatments.? How long after cessation of treatment?
We are tentatively discussing the possibility of going to Australia in late October, which will be one year since Hubby's treatment(neck disection/Chemo radiotherapy/),to which he reacted very badly, having to be admitted to hospital twice to finish treatment.
We are both over 65, but young in spirit, but dont want to embark on this holiday without some deep thought,& advice from someone in our position who has done it.
We would be staying with relatives initially.
Any advice

Fran,

Since my completion of treatment (radiotherapy only) on 22 September, 2004 I have travelled from UK to my holiday home in Carmel valley, California twice. Door to door a 17 hours trip. LHR to San Francisco (10+hours). Then to Monterey, CA a short trip by air.

The first trip was 3 months after completion of treatment and was for 2 months duration. This was upon reflection, perhaps a little early. The current second trip is six weeks into a three months duration, returning on 30th June, 2005.

Before my illness I regularly visited the States so, to a degree, I am back to my old routine except that earlier trips were of longer duration.

My oncology team advised me to lead as normal a life as possible after treatment. This I have endeavoured to do and believe that the advice was good. My trips have given me great confidence but this of course was supported by the fact my recovery seemed to be going well.

The flights as such affected me not at all. My only reservation during holidays was a slight feeling of apprehension at having my oncology team so far away. Of course, my team gave me clearance for each trip and gave me an e-mail number to use should I experience anything untoward. For this and all else I admire my team enormously.

Even with limited information about your husband's case, my feeling is that you should go and enjoy a surely much needed holiday, always of course, with agreement from your docs. I hope you do!

Incidentally, I am a young-in-outlook 72 years of age.

Regards, Fridge

Hi Fridge, thank you for your comprehensive reply, its given us food for thought. Our journey would be around 28hrs(door to door) & we hate it, but its neccesary when all the family is out there.
Hubby is still being seen monthly so we'll ask the Docs. what they think, when we see them next month.

Paul what is this love affair you have with India? How on earth did you not only get the energy to fly that distance, but with a peg tube as well?.
Where do you go, it would be good to read about your adventures.

Any news about VickiLynn?

Hi Paul

I was in Crete for a conference and think it worth a visit. Am now in the Far East, the journey is a bit long but Malaysia is a great place.

I haven't been to the USA since 1989! And it wasn't to Las Vegas. We haven't heard from Vicki in a while. If you are in touch with her, tell her we think of her. Pray she is well.

Best wishes
Vinod Cool (in Jakarta)
