Dear Doctor,

I woke up one morning, and there was a small white dot on my left tonsil. My throat is red, and looks almost like a bloodshot eye. I have been coughing quite a bit. I have smoked for a year off and on, I have been planning on quitting for a while now...but just haven't been sucessfull. I just wanted to know what you thought.

I went to the ER because I have no health insurance, the doctor there looked at my throat twice and couldn't even see the white dot on my tonsil. But he did see the red throat. He said he would take a culture, which he did and the results aren't back yet. But, as of right now he told me I probably just have a cold or something, But I have never gotten a white spot on my tonsil with a cold before. The doctor put me on 800 MG of moltrin and sent me home.

I am only 22, I am worried that I have tonsil cancer and that I am going to die before I can even start a family with my wife. Any help you could give me would be great. Thank you.

Sincerely, John P.A. LoFaro

Hi John

A cancer of the tonsil doesn't usually present as a white spot on the tonsil. The white spot could be a bead of pus in an infected tonsil crypt or a tonsil stone. The red throat could be caused by a throat infection, coughing a lot or clearing your throat a lot. See your doctor again if it doesn't clear up after the antibiotics.

Best wishes
