I am organising a Relay for Life in Upminster, Essex and we are inviting cancer survivors to participate in the ‘Survivors Lap of Honour’. Cancer survivors are our guests of honour and it is only fitting that they start our relay.

For many, the experience of gathering together with other survivors is extremely powerful and a huge encouragement for everyone present. Survivors will be presented with a Survivors T-shirt to wear on the opening lap and a pin badge memento.

The Relay for Life involves teams of supporters who will be raising money for Cancer Research UK by taking part in our relay. Each team commit to keep ‘their relay’ going for the duration of the event. The only time the relay will stop is for the "Candle of hope" ceremony where candles, dedicated in remembrance of those we have lost to cancer and in celebration of those who have and are still beating cancer, will be lit. Many people add special messages and pictures in this emotional and moving ceremony. The candles then burn through the night, lighting the way for those still walking.

The venue is Thames Chase Forest Centre, Broadfields Farm, Pike Lane, Upminster, Essex. RM14 3NS.

The relay starts at 4.00pm on the 15th July 2006 (with the survivors lap) and finishes at 10.00am on the 16th July.
