We are a fundraising committee organising Essex’s first “Relay for Life” over the weekend 2nd – 3rd July 2005. This is an event, first started in the USA, which seeks to raise money to fight cancer and increase the awareness of Cancer within our community.
The Relay for Life involves teams of supporters who will be raising money by taking part in a 24-hour relay. The relay involves people walking around a track specially provided by The Brentwood Centre, Doddinghurt Road, Brentwood. Survivors of the disease are invited to take part in a lap of honour and a "candle of hope" ceremony will allow everyone to dedicate a candle to those who have died from Cancer or to celebrate the lives of those who have survived. Like most people, we have all had friends and family who have been affected by Cancer. Please can you help us to make this a spectacular weekend by raising the awareness of the event amongst colleagues? Get a team together – a team can be any size you like although most teams have around 10 members. Ask family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to join you and make a difference. Invite any survivors of cancer that you know to participate in the ‘Survivors Lap of Honour’ that begins the Relay for Life. For many, the experience of gathering together with other survivors is extremely powerful and a huge encouragement for everyone present. Participants in the opening ceremony will be presented with a special Survivors T-shirt to wear on the opening lap. Survivors are also invited to put together a team. The Candle of Hope ceremony, held at night, is one of the most inspirational moments of the Relay. A bag filled with sand and a glowing candle to light up messages of Hope. Many people write the names of loved ones on their bag whilst others add special messages and pictures. The candles of hope are lit and they burn into the night, leading the way for the Relay walkers throughout the night. Would you be prepared to put up posters and leaflets advertising this very special event, the first to be held in Essex? I hope we can count on your support. Please do not hesitate to contact us either by email, phone or post. Hi Sarah
I am sure our members would like to participate in such an activity. It would be good if your group could focus on increasing awareness of mouth cancer as it is presently not as well supported as the other better known cancers despite it being so much more disabling (difficulty with eating, taste, swallowing, speech, appearance). Would that be possible? Best wishes Vinod Disclaimer: Please see your own dentist/doctor for a proper diagnosis as my words should not, in any circumstances, be taken as dental/medical advice.
