Hello, I am a student at Sunderland University and am looking into writing an article to raise awareness among students of mouth cancer caused by HPV virus. I am looking to speak to someone who would speak to me about living with this, some information on treatment and any advice they would give to others. This article is to make people aware of this and speaking to someone who can give me first hand experience would be great and a help for the readers to be able to understand. I would love to hear from anyone interested. Please reply to this post or contact me on sophie.green@sunderland.ac.uk

Thankyou for your time

Sophie Green

Hi Sophie
HPV virus. Not sure I know what that is exactly. Not sure if anyone with oral cancer knows what caused it unless they are heavy tocacco users. This site is full of the information you are looking for and I'm sure people would help. Perhaps you should compile a questionnaire that people could fill in. I will answer any questions I can.

Good Evening Sophie,
I am a mouth cancer patient three times over to date but no one has mentioned any connection with HPV 16/18. I don't think anyone bothers to check. If I can be of any help I would be happy to contribute,
Keep Smiling
John

Hi Sophie,

I came across journal articles about the relationship between HPV and oral cancer when googling and initially felt awful because I wondered whether I could have inadvertantly been the cause of my partners cancer. I havent dared explore it but my subsequent reading suggests that the link is very real. However, it does not seem to be discussed at all this side of the pond - UK.

I cant volunteer to help with your research - as we don't know whether my partner has HPV. However, I would be very interested to read your paper as I am sure it will include a lit review about the link, which would be really interesting.

Good luck

Cathy

Hi Sophie

I didn't have any of the other risk factors for mouth cancer and my doctor said it was possible it could have been caused by a virus, but as John says they don't check so I don't know if that was the case or not. I expect that will be the same for many people on here.

Regards
Gwyn

Good Morning Sophie,
Since my posting two days ago my mouth cancer score has increased from three to four. Yesterday I met the consultant and the surgeon to discuss the necessary treatment. One of the dozen and a half questions I had prepared was "is it likely that HPV16/18 could be a contributing factor in this latest and previous mouth cancers"
I was given the impression that it was unlikely to be a factor and that there is a good deal of contradictory evidence regarding a connection between HPV and mouth cancer. There is positive evidence in support of a connection between HPV and cervical cancer (Cf. the recent decision to vaccinate girls of school age to prevent HPV in order to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer). The opinion seemed to be that HPV is likely to be present in the mouth but not a significant factor in mouth cancer. However the virus can be passed on during oral sex and become a significant factor in cervical cancer.
I wish you well Sophie in your quest, it seems that you are going to have your work cut out sorting through the various conflicting opinions I hope this post does not add to the confusion.
I am not a health professional so my opinion carries no weight but if I can be of help please say so.
Keep Smiling
John
