Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, in partnership with Research and Marketing Ltd., is asking cancer patients and their carers what their treatment experiences in Welsh hospitals have been like.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales became operational on 1st April 2004. The Inspectorate has been established by the National Assembly for Wales within arrangements of the Health and Social Care Act 2003, which received Royal Assent in November 2003.

The objective of the Inspectorate is to improve the healthcare of people in Wales by focusing on local inspection and investigation of NHS bodies in Wales to ensure quality, patient safety and national healthcare standards are complied with.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales is undertaking a review of the Cancer Networks in Wales. As part of this review Healthcare Inspectorate Wales wishes to conduct a survey of patient or carer views of cancer care received in the last four years.

If you have been treated for cancer in a Welsh hospital in the last 4 years, or have been a carer for someone who was, then we would like to hear from you. The survey is completely confidential, and you can take part over the telephone, by email or by post.

If you would like to take part in the survey, please:

send an email to caresurvey@rmltd.net
OR
leave a message on our 24 hour voicemail: 02920 435801

I don't want to take part in your survey as I can't. I live in England, but we often think of moving back to South Wales. Unfortunately I have not been impressed so far by experiences of relatives for other ailments or how a head fall I sustained at Christamas in south Wales was dealt with (7 hour wait at the Heath just to see a Doc in A and E - it was quicker for my husband to drive us back to Worcester).

What is the procedure when you move from one county to another in UK. Is it the original oncology consultant/dept that sends on your notes to a new hospital or does it all have to be set up again by a new GP in your new home town.

I've had good follow up care in Worcs and I am anxious to know how this might work when moving back to Wales. In fact so far one thing that has put us off moving back is wondering how prompt hospital and referral treatment might be.

(PS I am 3 years post surgery for occult primary head and neck cancer July 2002 and still under follow up care 4 monthly.)

Hi Pauline,

Thank you for your comments, it's a shame that we're not including those treated in England because I think that it's definitely something worth investigating.

I'm afraid I am unable to give you any answers regarding procedures when moving from one county to another. Perhaps there is another board user who might have some answers for you.

Best of luck with everything.

Sarah

Sarah thank you for your answer. I may just ask my consultant or the great nursing sister he has next time I see them.

Hi Sarah, I was seen at Shrewbury Hospital near the border country, and was told I had a Quinsy, but it was throat cancer, got back to London asap.
