"Treatment often leaves mouth cancer patients with problems of eating, talking and facial disfigurement. Depression is also a problem. Some have expressed a desire in becoming expert patients who could advise others on coping strategies, types of support available and benefits they could claim. Mouth cancer patients and their carers could benefit from the Expert Patient Programme. "

Some of you might wish to have some training in helping yourself (and others).

The Expert Patients Programme website has some new developments being planned like an online EPP course. You could apply for the course if you wish to train to help others on the board.

The recent news about Cancer patients missing cash help and Cancer patients losing out on £200m a year in benefits 'scandal' shows that there is a need for a source of good advice for mouth cancer patients.

The National Extension College (NEC) was set up over 40 years ago as a charity to help people of all ages fit learning into their lives. The NEC Counselling Course may be worth considering. Their Equal Access to Open Learning programme might help fund the course.

Dear Dr Joshi

Thank you for your email. It would be possible to adapt the EPP for mouth cancer patients, but their may be a range of ways you could approach this. It may be that patients could benefit from some nurse-led support initially, then attend a generic EPP course. If there are suffient numbers to warrent it the EPP course could be formally adapted, piloted and then made available for mouth cancer patients. Incidently, McMillan are also beginning to run EPP type courses for cancer patients so there may be
opportunities there too.

Hope this helps

Do you think there should be a course tailored for mouth cancer patients? If anyone is interested in getting onto a EPP course, please contact me. I would be interested in your views.

Best wishes
Vinod Coffee
