Great News: Free cancer drugs scheme begins
quote:

Up to 150,000 cancer patients in England can now start applying for free prescriptions on the NHS.

Gordon Brown announced in September he was abolishing charges for the treatment of cancer and its effects from 1 April.
Patients can apply for five-year exemption certificates entitling them to all their NHS prescriptions free of charge, not just those for cancer.
Application forms can be collected from GP surgeries and hospital clinics.
Applications received by 24 March will be processed in time for the start of the scheme on 1 April.

Patients who do not receive their certificate in time may have any prescription charges they have paid since 1 April refunded.

update:

Cancer patients will be able to apply for their exemption certificates for their free prescriptions from 1st April 2009. All cancer patients undergoing treatment for cancer, the effects of cancer or the effects of cancer treatment are now encouraged to apply for exemption certificates from their GP surgery or oncology clinics.

Exemption certificates last for 5 years (but can be reapplied for) and cover all prescriptions not just those relating to cancer - they must be countersigned by their GP, hospital doctor or service doctor.

I've only just found out about this - shouldn't my GP practice or hospital have told me about it?

Is there any way of reclaiming all the charges that I've paid?

Hello 200

I think that you should be able to claim the past payments made. I suggest that you ask about this at a Citizens Advice centre or write to the department concerned. Let us know what you find out.

Best wishes

found this on the NHS website questions and answers that may be of use. It says you can claim charges backdated to a month before the exemption cert was issued.
Medical Exemption Certificates
I would suggest writing to the address in Newcastle and asking about getting all the charges back. It seems the government recognised that not all GPs were aware of the free prescriptions for cancer patients and did not issue the certificates. I know there was a mix up with mine, the oncologist saying my GP would issue it but the GP thinking the Oncologist would. I knew about it as i had read about it on the BBC website and made enquiries.

Please support the Put the fair into welfare petition to preserve benefits for cancer patients:

quote:
Put the fair into welfare
Time is running out to make sure that people with cancer don’t lose benefits.
Proposed changes to the benefits system could leave thousands of people living with cancer without vital financial support during the toughest fight of their lives - pushing some into poverty.

Please take a few minutes to listen to Julian and Karen in our audio clip . You’ll hear what the proposed changes to the Welfare Reform Bill really mean for people living with cancer.

Help us campaign by signing our petition. Your support will be invaluable as we talk to Lords and MPs and they prepare to vote on these changes.
