hi folks,

I'm wondering if anyone out there can help us as we consider whether to undergo chemotherapy, our oral surgeon has passed us on to a specialist in chemo who, we hope, will answer some questions about effects (good and bad) of chemotherapy.

we have been advised that chemotherapy remains as the only recommended treatment. If John's cancer is """statistically non-curative""", I want to identify as many trials as possible, I know he'll be seeing a good medical oncologist on Monday, but I'd like to think we are doing our bit as well as possible!!

this is going to be another long weekend, waiting and hoping, any advice from you guys would be gratefully received.

Dear God, I wish I could say something constructive.

Speaking only from my own experience I'd say go for the advice from your oncologist as it sounds as though surgical treatment is no longer an option - and of course you've gone thru' the RT as well.

How about following your own advice """Carpe Diem"""! That's really all we cancer types can really do,

Yet again, corny as it sounds my prayers are with you both.

Hi jenbee

There is good information on chemotherapy at the link given in the section: PROFESSIONALS > CANCER TEXT-BOOK 1

There is also a good summary of Chemotherapy in:
Current Concepts In the Management of Oral Cancer which is a short scientific communication by Dr.Rehan A. Kazi M.S.(ENT), Dept. of Oncology, Masina Hospital, Bombay, India. It is towards the end of the article!

Send me your email address privately and I will send you links to abstracts of recent published articles on the use chemotherapy for oral cancers.

Best wishes

Vinod

Ethyol® Allows Greater Tolerability of Chemotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer
quote:
According to a recent article published in the journal Cancer, the cytoprotective agent Ethyol® (amifostine) may allow for greater delivery of chemotherapy in the treatment of head and neck cancer.

.. side effects caused by radiation therapy (ulcers, dry mouth, burning of the tissue at the site the radiation is aimed) are common. ...... these side effects often cause administration of chemotherapy or additional radiation therapy to be delayed or cancelled ...... may result in compromised outcomes, including a worsening of overall survival.

.... many drugs called radiation protectors have been tested in the laboratory for prevention of radiation damage to normal cells and tissues. ..... Ethyol is a radiation protector and the only drug that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in patients receiving radiation therapy for cancers of the head and neck.

The researchers concluded that amifostine allows patients with advanced head and neck cancer who are also undergoing radiation therapy to tolerate an extra cycle of chemotherapy. Longer follow-up is necessary to determine if this will result in improved survival for these patients, and future clinical trials are necessary to provide confirmed results. Patients with head and neck cancer who are to undergo radiation therapy may wish to speak with their physician regarding their individual risks and benefits of treatment with Ethyol.
