My dad has been diagnosed with tongue cancer, very advanced and malignant.
He has to go for a scan, can anyone tell me what this is? what they do? what they are looking for etc?
Also he has to have major surgery, what does this mean? what will he have to have done.
I have never really heard of mouth cancer before until my dad said he had it so i really dont know any more than what he tells me,and he isnt one for sharing his emotions or letting people know how bad things are.
I would really appreciate it if anyone can share any knowledge they might have,as it is very scary not knowing and with cancer being one of 'those' words that put fright into you even though it might be curable or easily dealt with. Confused

I have posted a reply to your question, """What is a Scan?""" in the Q & A section.

Do let us know how your father is doing.

Best wishes

Hi Doctor

Wold be grateful fopr your comments onthis reprinted matter

‘When it comes to appraising the effectiveness of treatment,’ Sutherland95 comments, ‘ one of the difficulties is the striking range in the natural duration of cancer of the same site in a series of cases.’ Sutherland95 gives among many cancers, the natural duration of cancers (left untreated) of the tongue and oral cavity in males ranging from three months to seventy five months, and of the cervix uteri and female breast, from three months to twelve and a half years and two months to seventeen and half years respectively.

Hello Blitzbob Smiler

"""one of the difficulties is the striking range in the natural duration of cancer of the same site in a series of cases."""

Sutherland95 is basically saying that it is difficult to predict the prognosis of a cancer based on the site. Hence, doctors try to use other parameters like the histology and lymph node involvement to get an idea of the aggressiveness of a cancer.Your questions about your treatment have lead to my raising it for discussion in the Q & A section. Hope you don't mind. Wink You might find the article mentioned there, """Prognosis in Cancer""" to be of interest. Big Grin

Best wishes
