I have just read one of the blogs that Dr Vinod joshi posted on the site a couple of days ago. In it David mentioned that he was pre-warned that one of the side effects of Cisplatin was joint pain. This is the first time I have heard that joint pain is a known side effect of Cisplatin. I don't think I realised what caused the pain initially, as I was taking Oramorph for the pain from the Radiotherapy, and only realised hat I was suffering from Joint Pain after I finished taking medication for the pain in my throat. I have suffered with the joint pain for months, and I think this has probably been aggravated by my poor and restricted diet, due to the weird taste of so many foods. I had pains in every joint in my body, knees, hips, ankles, wrists, shoulders, even my knuckles. The pains in my knees were excrutiating if I tried to kneel down on a hard floor.
About three months ago I decided to try taking some vitamin supplements, and I can strongly recommend chrondroitin and glucosamine to anybody who is suffering similar pains. Within a few days of taking these the joint pains had dissapeared, but if I stop taking the tablets for a few days the pains come back.
Has anybody else had joint pains after Cisplatin? If so what do you do to relieve them?

I had a high dose combination of Cisplatin & 5Fu.
Like you Jenni i didn't notice the joint pain until i came off the oramorph. However i found this had more to do with the nerve damage and peripheral neuropathy i have suffered. my knees and ankles can be so bad i can't stand for too long by the evening. I cant even hold a pen or do up buttons. But i understand this should improve with time.
Fingures crossed for us both!

Looks like I was lucky; just 2 large doses of Cisplatin during my 6 weeks of R/T. Both made me feel very sick, but no joint pain or any other lasting problems.

Hi, I had 7 Cisplatin treatments while getting radiation therapy. About a month before my treatments ended, I noticed that my left hip would hurt if I laid on it. Then after the treatments ended, both of my hips and my lower spine hurt almost all of the time. If I sit too long, it hurts in my hips to stand. If I stand to long, it hurts my spine. I have just recently noticed that my shoulders tend to hurt after driving or sitting at the computer. And, when I moved recently, I found that my hands/fingers/knuckles hurt )almost excrutiating)after cleaning. I talked with my Radiation Oncologist about it yesterday because I thought the hip/spine pain was from the radiation, but he said it was more likely from the chemo. I really hope this subsides soon - I'm only 39 and somedays I feel like I'm 89.

Kimberly,

I still get the joint pains 18 months after mt treatment finished. It could be because my muscles are weak and this puts more pressure on the joints.

Give the vitamins a go for a month and see if they help.
