I had my peg tube removed about six weeks' ago and have been struggling since then with leakage and soreness as the hole wouldn't heal over. I was told by the hospital that it would heal in 24/48 hours! Plus, I am allergic to the adhesive on all the dressings so my tummy looks like a patchwork quilt!
However, a friend gave me a jar of New Zealand Manuka Honey, I have used it for three days(putting it on the site with a cotton bud) and the hole has practically healed up! I had an appointment at the Peg Clinic yesterday and they reacted with some amusement when I said I was wasting their time (they had arranged for me to be 'glued up'). But, they had to accept the benefits of this honey when they saw the results. The doctor asked me to keep a diary and report back to them as they may well use the honey for other patients whose scars/peg sites refuse to heal. (It can be bought at Sainsbury's). I'm sure lots of you have heard of this before but just want to share it with anyone, like me, who hasn't! |

I have just read an article in the Mail reporting that Christie Hospital in Manchester is importing bulk quantities of Manuka Honey from New Zealand for their post-operative mouth and throat cancer patients. Not only does the honey have excellent healing properties, it also acts as a powerful antiseptic and antibiotic in the treatment of infected post operative wounds and can reduce the likelihood of MRSA infection.
I put a spoonful of Active 5+ Manuka Honey on my breakfast porridge each morning but at approx. £9 a jar I use it sparingly!!! |

My father purchased the Manuka Honey, and was advised to take three spoonfuls a day - half an hour before meals. He took it for about a fortnight until he had to stop as he found it was making his mouth sting, this may have been the right reaction but he found it extremely painful and had to stop. Hopefully he was an exception to the rule.

I mix Manuka Honey into my porridge oats in the morning. It soothes my throat nicely after being dried out through the night!
Also, i began eating 8 weeks after RT. 2 weeks of the honey - and no more accute throat pain. -~*Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds*~- ...Albert Einstein |
