Quick question - has anyone else been prescribed pentoxifylline? I am doing really well - no problems at all re. scars, flap, swallowing, eating, taste etc BUT (isn't there always a but?) I have a small (maybe 1/4 cm) patch of gum on the inside edge of where my lower left wisdom tooth would be that has separated to expose the bone (X-Rays are good no underlying damage to the jaw). My oncologist has prescribed pentoxifylline to increase blood flow and so encourage the gum to grow back over. Just wondered if anyone out there had experienced this and how they where treated

Hello Norm
You are being treated for Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible. Usually it is managed conservatively and with hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Pentoxifylline has been used for the treatment of radiation-related soft tissue injury with some success. Its utility in treatment for mandibular ORN is unknown, however. The use of this drug is described in Major healing of refractory mandible osteoradionecrosis after treatment combining pentoxifylline and tocopherol: a phase II trial. Let us know how you do. Hi Dr Vinod,
Well it works! The tiny piece of bone on the surface came away last night and the gum underneath has just about healed over. So heres hoping! Norman. |
