I have just received dramatically bad news. My lower jaw remaining (5) teeth will apparently fall out / not be able to support denture due to radiotherapy and the dental surgeon says I will not be able to wear dentures and therefore obliged to live off semi liquid food forever ! I cant come to terms with this outlook . can anyone help me with similar experiences ?

Hello Pepper

I too was told by the dental surgeon that the denture plate currently being made for me will only act as a "cosmetic aid" and I will not be able to eat with it in. So I too am faced with a lifetime of "mush". We should form our own club! (I console myself with the fact that there are a lot of people out there who have to rely on a PEG for feeding on a permanent basis) Regards Bx

Hello Pepper

If your teeth are presently in good health, you can try keeping them so. The teeth are at risk from the dry mouth caused by lack of saliva. You can find out more about this complication and how to care for your mouth and teeth at the MCF Website section on Complications.

The advice given in this previous post on oral hygiene will help you look after your teeth.

Best wishes

HI Barbra, I will be your first member Roll Eyes
If you have read my story you will know that I too am a MUSHY.
All my teeth are rotten from the Radiotherapy and I have cosmetic Dentures over them.
I do feel so sorrow for people like Vickie Lynne who still have to rely on the PEG it is awful Frowner
I hate going into the Supermarket and seing all that lovely food it makes me so envious of people.I always come out of the Supermarket with the same things usually Milk, Eggs and Ice cream.
I hate it in the Summer walking round and seeing people eat Takeaways (like Kebabs and beefburger rolls ect) although I was never really one for all that would give anything to be able to eat one now.
To be very honest I wish that I was back on the peg sometimes as I would not have to bother finding things to make and then having to mash it all up to eat it, It does NOT taste the same.

Another thing my taste buds seem to change from Sweet,Salty to acidy Banghead

Although I can eat now Paul, I do feel for you. As a food lover I can recall that first Xmas and almost dying inside at the sight of trolleys piled high. It was hugely mentally depressing and felt like a punishment.

To see it weekly with no improvment must be devastating. I recall the sheer frustration of thinking people so greedy when I was living on extra milk soupy rice pudding and milky drinks mainly and even that was tasteless.

Ever since this experience I think people eat too much. I went out for meal recently with an old friend who visited and my friend literally hoovered up her food and my lavish can't manage any more remains!

Overeating now disgusts me.

:Hi Pauline, every where you go people are stuffing food, perhaps we are more fussy what we eat, I know I have a phobia about eating out in case it is not clean, or people have washed ther hands. Teeth, well they took my lowere molars out and told me to wait a few months, I have a plate with four molars, which was shreading my gums and most painful, but has now settled in, and work quite well, the jaws have a life of there own and clam shut now and afain so the whole of my cheeks inside are very bitten and often quite raw, but hey I am still here, not up to curry standard as yet, and when things get very raw, have porridge with double cream, as comfort food. Big Bear Healing Hugs to all you out there. Garance
