All, based on some input from this group and other reading I've decided to go forward with a flap for my current cancer. Depending on which Dr group is consulted, chemo treatments prior to the surgery were suggested. And the "mainline" thought is to get the flap...... so... I'll be joining some of you in the "flap club".

I would appreciate insights on this topic for those in this group that have information.

Best wishes,

bob

Bob, can you explain exactly what a flap is - not sure I know. I recently met a girl that had a graft from her forearm onto the side of her tongue, but is that considered a flap?

Hey Roxanne, I think the difference is the thickness or bulk....(i think) the flap is tissue harvested that includes nerve connectors and veins to attach and replace the removed portion of the tongue....I think the 'graft' is thinner..... that's my best guess...

the flap IS taken from the forearm, or leg or butt depending on what it's replacing (I've read)...so right now I'm a sponge gathering all the info I can.... what you just received is what I've gathered in the last 48 hrs

thanks for checking in....

Hi folks

Flap is the only term I've ever heard for replacement of part of the tongue with another part (whether it's from the butt, leg, or in my case forearm), dimensions notwithstanding.

I didn't get the opportunity for consultation. My doctor (originally from Alberta, I believe, Roxanne) simply came into the exam room and pretty much announced what the surgical plan was.

Are there membership cards, T-shirts and a special handshake for the flap club? (What happens in Flap Club stays in Flap Club?)

Bob, I hope it turns out as well for you as it has for me.
