H Dave,
Everyones different in respect to how long the ulcers and sores last.
For me personally they didn't begin to improve until 3 months post R/T and even now, though they are mostly gone i do have one last irritating spot in my throat that i keep catching. For me, i found as soon as i started actualy getting enough nutrtion in it slowly began to improve.
It wont peak until a couple of weeks AFTER treatment finnishes unfortunately!
I do hope you start to feel it ease up a little. My worst were the ones in the corners of my jaw at the back. They were deep and bled and i couldn't speak! Then there was the giant that covered my ENTIRE soft palette! Ooo i cringe just remembering them! *lol
I'm with you on this one!
All the best to you bth!
Michelle

Robins mouth ulcers arrived on day 7 and are still his biggest problem to date 4 days post radiotherapy. They are huge and are the reason why hecant eat or drink. The doctor examined him on day 9 and said they were as bad as they had seen.He also had thrush in his mouth which is still there!our doctor prescribed the following.
mucaine mouth wash which has a local anaesthetic in it
Soluble Asprin Gargles with lemon mucilage
oral Nystan
Soda and salt mouthwashes
Fentayl patch for the pain of the ulcers
The whole of both side of robins tongue has become a huge great sore as has the floor of his mouth. This problem is the most difficult of the side effects we have to cope with and is the longest lasting and the most painful. It is very much trial and error but speak the oncology registrar when you go for your next treatment.Ours insists there is no need for anyone to be in pain during radiotherapy and they seem to have several alternatives to suit different issues

good luck
liz

Hello all

We have a survey poll on how long the mucositis (these ulcers and discomfort) lasts. At the moment, the consensus is 'less than 5 weeks'. Do participate to make it even more representative of what is experienced. Thanks.

Best wishes

Hello there

Bill (my husband) doesn't start his chemo till 25th, then he has the radiotherapy. I have been reading up on it (as Michelle says a little learning can be a dangerous thing) apart from anything else, the mouth ulcers sound horrendous. I am so worried because I know he just will not be able to cope.

We go for a kidney test on Thursday, can't see where anyone else has had that done, is it common?

Hey Angie how are you?
Tghe ulcers aren't good but i'm sure Bill will get through it. It's a matter of needs must really!
The kidney test is normal, it's to check all is well with them before chemo because the Cisplatin is a large molecule so lots of hydration fluids are provided with iot so it doesn't damage the kidneys and can pass through easier. So you're not alone with it!
Hope you're keeping your head up!
Take care,
Michelle x

You should try Prevention Periodontal Mouth Rinse I promise it will work great! I found it on ebay and then found it at Walgreens for the same price. It healed all the sores on my tounge and all over my gums.

Hi there Chelle!!

Thanks for that, you're always a mine of information.

How are you feeling now that you have been back at work a couple of weeks?, doing any more hours yet?

Whilst going to the hospital today Bill actually voiced what I had been frightened of, about the delay in treatment and the tumor getting bigger. We just pretent it is not happening, and to be fare, you would not think there is anything wrong with Bill to look at him. I keep thinking they will ring from the hospital and say they have made a mistake. Anyway it feels much better just sharing the thought with him.

Am still worried about how he will cope but as you say, needs must.

Lovely to hear from you again.

Love Angie XX

Hi Bubbleberry

Thanks for your suggestion, should it be used before treatment to prevent?

Regards

Angie

Hey Angie,
It didn't really hit me until i'd finnished treatment. Like you say, it all seems unreal and you kind of get swept up in it all with all the tests and treatment. But before you know it it's all over (although when you're in the thick of it, it feels as though it will never end).
Work is great thank you for asking! I'm managing 4 & half/ 5 hours now and taking part in more of the manual stuff now. The main issue is with my shoulder muscles. They're frozen from the R/T & really ache by the time i'm due to leave. I'm indulging in massages and reflexology courtesy of the Sarah Lee Trust at the local hospice. & my massuer is determined to help ease it!
But it's done WONDERS for my confidence and peace of mind being back!
Glad you're starting to talk about how you both feel. It really is vital to ytour relationship!
All the best with the next phase Angie.
Michelle x
