Mike starts 33 session on Monday and I have been scrolling through trying to find what I need to get to try and deal with what lies ahead for him. So far

Bicarb (for salt/bicarb mouthwash)
Lipsalve
Aqueous Cream

I've already got him taking a multi-supplement with Iron + Vit C snd fish oils (anyone know of a liquid Vit supplement if he can't handle tablets later on? So that it can go in his PEG?)

Any other suggestions gratefully received!

Jane

Thank you for that.

I'm terrified - can't begin to imagine how he feels (and he's not telling!)

No probs

To me if the real effects did not start till about the 4th week i was in hospital once a week due to to being sick constant and needed fluids i think this was more to the chemo

it gets hard to swallow and my mouth broke out in ulcers (Large) still have 2 10 weeks after Rt

For the ulcers if Mike does get any i would
recommend gelclair and difflam mouthrinse

Its not pleasant and as i mentioned the effects carry on working after the rt is finished

Keep us posted and im sure everyone on this site will support and help in any way we/they can
its no easy ride for the carers to my wife got me through it

i told her at the beging of the treatment that if i snapped at her it was not realy me its the treatment

Take care
Dave and Sue

Hi JaneW

Dave hit most of the problems with side effects.

Would suggest one or two other things.

Pain control, if you get it right there a good chance you can stay out of hospital,(I got it wrong by being pig headed). Pain started to really kick in at the end of the second week, when that happens you stop eating and drinking.

Ask about what they are going to do about pain control and have it ready to use. Don't wait and think it not that bad, once the mouth and throat start to hurt take the pain killers, no need to be in pain.

Check that any supplements your husband is taking are OK with his treatment, I took loads and then my liver started to over load, they could not work out what was happening till I told them I was taking this and that, I ended up missing a session of chemo.

Drink plenty of water as much as you can, infact carry a bottle at all times.

Hope that above is of help

Regards

Dear Jane,
I think I do qualify to talk on peg feed after all I have been on the same for the last seven years - without having had one solid meal or even a drop of water. Initially my wife tried supplements like Ensure etc - but I hated the stuff (I could taste the same via reflux). The urge to eat "normal" food was really burning inside me and we decided to do something crazy -I got my wife Sonya to make me a cheese sandwhich with we put through the mixer along with some milk to puree the same - and boy!! it worked like a dream. I now have everything that everyone eats - the only difference being I have the liquid form and the rest solid - but ultimately it all comes to the same place -the stomach.
As I post this Mike must have started his radiation and hope it goes through smoothly. You did great by fortifying him with the multi - supplement of iron, vitaminC and fish oils. It will go a long way to keep him a little more comfortable. I am not a doctor under any circumstances but the last seven years have really been an eye opener to a lot of things.
Take care and pass on all my good wishes to Mike,
Ananth
