Hi,
I've just been for a CT Scan today, and I was talking to the Radiologists afterwards and they had never heard of cancer of the Tonsils. Thank goodness for the awareness week, as mouth cancer survival rates are greatly improved by early detection everybody needs to be made aware of the possibility. If even professionals in Radiology haven't heard of some of the possible mouth cancers we have a long upward struggle. So far I have been lucky, as I spotted my cancer early, but until I saw that one of my tonsils was enlarged and started searching on the internet I had no idea about mouth cancer. |

Well done, Anne. Have added your interview to the list of our activities for MCAW. If anyone hears it, do let us know.

Good Morning,
May I be allowed to offer my twopenn'orth. In the last few days I was interviewd by Real Radio (Leeds) Minster radio (York) Telegraph and Argus (Bradford) On Tuesday morning my wife and I are going to the BBC studios in Leeds for a patient and spouse interview which will be broadcast live on the Radio Leeds "breakfast time". I don't mind doing these interviews but in the last two MCAWs I have been featured on local radio,Yorkshire television, several local newspapers, a national and the odd trade journal.I am a little concerned that people might think "Oh its him again,he must be the only person with mouth cancer, can't be very common" This would be seriously counter productive. I would appreciate other campaigners views on this matter, should I give it a rest for a year or two? or should I go along with more interviews?( which I am quite prepared to do) Keep Smiling John |

Hello John
Thanks for helping with the interviews. I don't think readers/viewers will think that there is only one mouth cancer patient in Yorkshire! But I do take your point. But when Brenda and you are interviewed, you speak not only as mouth cancer patients but also as our MCF spokespersons. I do have a list of 15-20 patients from Bradford & Wakefield area who are happy to do (and some have done) interviews with radio/press/magazines but I think the media sometimes tends to contact those patients they already know of. Anyway, the important thing is that we have someone to do it, and you do a mighty good job. Best wishes Vinod Disclaimer: Please see your own dentist/doctor for a proper diagnosis as my words should not, in any circumstances, be taken as dental/medical advice. Hello John, I know exactly what you mean. I have been in my regional newspaper for the past 3 years during MCA week, plus BBC Look North. In fact I am featured twice in one week in the Newcastle Chronicle this year and, like you, I feel the local population will be thinking "not that b....y woman again"!! Perhaps we have to think of a slightly different aspect to bring to the public's notice. This year we have the Mouth Cancer Walk to publicise. In your case I'm sure you will have no problem in injecting a bit of humour into an otherwise serious subject! Not everyone is able (or wants) to speak in public and it might be good that the local population 'adopts' us as the spokesperson for MC and follows our progress. We can be a positive voice for our local hospital and the medical team who cared for us. After all, we are speaking on behalf of all mouth cancer sufferers and, like you, alerting the public as to what to watch out for. None of us would wish to be famous for having mouth cancer but, if we are given a chance to raise awareness, then we will go for it!! See you in Hollywood........!
