As the day unfolds and darkness falls
I look upon my time
In a world immersed in sadness
Of famine, war, and crime
The love I’ve lost and brushed aside
The fears I’ve overcome
The turbulence I’ve lived through
And the things I haven’t done
I often think of times gone by
And how it could have been
But I can’t move on with memories
And the future can’t be seen
I held a light that burned so bright
And stumbled on the way
Now the flame is just a flicker
As it lights another day
I’ve lived the way I’m destined
There is no turning back
And the wall that seemed so solid
Has now appeared to crack
Fragile is the life we live
And the things we have to face
The balance of our nature
That makes the human race
My thoughts unfold inside me
As I lay awake in bed
Not knowing what tomorrow brings
Is what I’ve come to dread.

quote:
a cousin's husband was just diagnosed with an acute leukemia, very bad prognosis. in his early 60's. multimillionaire. dust to dust. how naked i feel. we come naked, and we leave naked. with nothing. and we weren't even asked nor have a choice.

do i live a life of "if only's"? no. every day has been a worthy day. a good day. a bad day. but nevertheless a worthy day. as long as i am here, today will be another memorable day. when we are young we do not have the privilege of such thoughts. but as we slow down, our values change as our perception of life changes. why worry about the leak in the shower screen when it is so much more pleasant to sit and inhale the scent of the jasmine?

we have been so brainwashed to carry out our responsibilities that it is difficult to drag ourselves from that mindset. the wonders of freedom. the dropping of the shackles that imprison us. not just the body but the mind as well. all the things that we have done. and not done. that we can do now. or not. the limitations of the fragile body. the infinite mind that eventually has to succumb to the limits of life.

Glad you liked it Jennifer. It could reflect the thoughts of any one of us who has had to deal with Cancer.
