Oral Cancer: A growing concern (PDF)

Article by Dr Vinod K Joshi, founder of MCF
published in Preventive Dentistry Volume 1 Issue 1 2006

Preventive dentistry doesn’t immediately conjure up an image of mouth cancer prevention, does it? But as dentists, our role is to prevent and treat oral disease.

A qualified GDP can expect to see at least a couple of mouth cancer lesions during their practising lifetime. Obviously this is an average statistic affected by geographical location and social class of clientele, much like the statistics for caries. For both caries and mouth cancer, prevention of the disease is better than treatment, and early treatment results in less damage to the patient.

The Health Evidence Bulletins - Wales act as signposts to the best  evidence for prevention of mouth cancers. Examining a broad range of evidence types and subject areas, where information from randomised controlled trials is available it is included.  However, many health issues do not lend themselves easily to investigation, or have not yet been studied, by this method.  In these cases, high quality evidence has been sought from observational and other studies.
